Responding to the Las Vegas Shooting

Dear Fellow Members of the American Solidarity Party of Ohio:

Regrettably, this morning’s tragedy in Las Vegas is already being politicized, with the commentators already dug into their familiar partisan trenches.

In a way, this politicization is understandable. We politicize tragedies because in the 21st century every inch of every conversation is fought for on the national stage. Any political party that declines to politicize is at a disadvantage because outrage is a very effective motivator… but at what cost? Surely there’s a better way to respond.

Perhaps it’s time to shift the focus from reactions driven by outrage to reactions driven by compassion. If today’s events can’t drive us to compassion, what possibly could?

Pray if you’re inclined to. Send thoughts or vibes if that’s your preference. By all means allow this to move you to get involved in advocacy, and share whatever political insights you feel are appropriate. But please, let it come from compassion which unites us rather than outrage that divides.

Let us have compassion for the victims, for their families and friends. Let us mourn as a nation. Let us show our sincere appreciation for the first responders and medical personnel. Then, drawing strength from our common compassion and humanity, let us work together to begin to heal our divisions move forward as one, united in our diversity.

God bless you all, and may all who mourn find peace. Lord, please guide our response, and help us to do our part to make a better world come out of this darkness. Amen!

Best Regards,
Greggory Michael Joseph Gassman
Former Vice Chairman
