Responding to the Manhattan Truck Attack

Dear Fellow Members of the American Solidarity Party of Ohio:

“It is with sorrow and prayer that the American Solidarity Party notes the truck attack that occurred in Manhattan on Tuesday, October 31. Eight people were killed; six of them were foreign tourists. If police and other first responders had not acted so quickly, more would probably have died.

After being shot by an officer, arrested, and treated, the perpetrator, Sayfullo Saipov, appears to be cooperating with authorities. He is a legal Uzbek immigrant who holds a green card. No doubt more facts will emerge, but according to the latest reports citing the FBI, he was inspired by ISIS propaganda and instructional videos while acting alone. This crime is accordingly an act of terrorism. It is not the first terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11, nor will it be the last, because no matter how well immigrants are vetted, we can never ensure that the allure of radical ideology–Islamist or otherwise, foreign or domestic–is completely eliminated. The best we can do is remain vigilant against terrorism in all its forms, and treat our Muslim citizens and friends, the vast majority of whom are peaceful, with justice and respect.

Our sympathy goes out to the families of the victims, and we offer our prayers not only for them but also for Saipov himself. A deeply misguided child of God who had done grave evil, he should not be considered beyond redemption, no matter what punishment he may deserve for his crime.”
